You can cut the risk from malicious software or hacker intrusions to nearly zero in just one step. That step is to stop using computers with Microsoft's increasingly vulnerable Windows operating system. In this article in the NCTimes it explains how Linux can be a
more secure alternative to Windows
Overall this is a good
articles but new Linux users must be aware of one very important thing. Most
default installations install MANY more services than the average user will need
and turns them on by default. For Linux to be a secure alternative to Windows
the new users will need to investigate how to turn off all unnecessary services.
The other downside of Linux for new users is the area of software updates. Linux
certainly has the ability to have updates fetched and applied automatically, but
that is usually not set up by default and for a person who is not familiar with
Linux this can be a daunting task.
There are distributions
that make these tasks much easier for the windows users; Mandrake (http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/) and Fedora (http://fedora.redhat.com/) are two distributions that make
the windows transition easier. In my opinion, Mandrake Linux is one of the best
distributions for the average user moving from windows
Overall I think that Linux
is the more secure and flexible OS but it has the potential to be less secure if
not properly configured and people need to keep this in mind when reading this
