Apple's OS X, a suped-up commercial version of bsd, is making it's way into
enterprise data centers and desktops. What does this mean? Hopefully,
it means linux & bsd versions of programs like Adobe PhotoShop, Illustrator,
and other apple-centric programs that we all know and love. The G5 is a 1U dual 64bit rack mounted server running the new OS X 10.4 "Tiger" version of the Apple BSD-based operating system. I remember when a Mac was used to produce graphics and play Oregon Trail. Times are indeed changing for the folks over at Apple.
After this operating system gets more popular, people will be more confortable with *NIX based systems. Also, when more and more software vendors produce products for this platform it can only do good for the various flavors of linux and bsd. I'm not saying we'll see a free version of PhotoShop anytime soon - but at least you might be able to run it on a stable operating system.
These trends can only bring the world closer to chosing open-source options - that's good for the business of computing.
For more info on the mac OS X (tiger) server see the Apple Store. |
