Many believe that there are security issues with Open Source software. Whilst it is true that Open Source is not a security panacea - for example, there can be hot spots in the code, and it may be possible that some parts have not been fully reviewed -many believe that it has inherent advantages.

Astaro, a company providing Open Source security products, is one vendor that actually believes that Open Source has advantages over proprietary software. Speaking on behalf of Astaro, CEO Jan Hichert, explains that one of the main advantages of the Open Source movement is that there has sprung up a network of around 100,000 developers working on Open Source software projects. Rather than being driven by financial incentives, these developers are motivated to write code of the highest quality in order to achieve recognition and respect from their peers. A further advantage of Open Source is that it is public, meaning that anyone can access and modify source code. Because of this, security flaws are more likely to be discovered, since so many people are looking at the code.
